Roadworks HighSt/SchoolRd

Godshill Parish Community Roadworks - High St & School Rd

FROM: Island Roads

October 2026

Dear Resident/Occupier

Carriageway Reconstruction Works
(school road & high street, godshill)

We are writing to let you know about the carriageway reconstruction and resurfacing works due to take place in your area shortly, and to provide you with some information and guidance in relation to what will happen during the works, to enable you to plan accordingly. During this work no on-street parking and no vehicle through access will be permitted within the areas of closure.  This is because we are excavating the highway to a depth of up to 240mm so we can address the underlying issues that have caused the road to deteriorate.

We recognise that these improvement works may cause some inconvenience for residents and businesses but we hope any disruption will be offset by the long-term improvements we are making.  Doing this work now should greatly reduce the need for future maintenance work and the disruption that it brings.

Please note, there are a variety of factors including inclement weather and emergency works that may affect the timing of works. Please watch the on-site boards for confirmation/changes of the start date / duration (example shown below).

Timing of the works:

  • Reconstruction works due to start W/C 2nd November 2026 for approximately 8 weeks.
  • The works will pause on Friday 12th December 2026 and resume on Monday 4th January 2027.
  • Reconstruction works will take place during the day between 07:30 – 16:00 / Monday to Friday.
  • These works will be completed in 3 phases.
  • Final resurfacing works (phase 4) will be undertaken during 2027, with further information to follow.  Due to the nature of these works, they can be undertaken at night.
  • Advance warning boards with start and end date will be erected before works commence.

Access

During the works there will be no through route between West Street, Godshill and Whiteley Bank.  While we are working in the phase which directly affects yourself, if you have a medical condition, a disability and/or a social care problem such as mobility problems or near-term pregnancy that may impact you or another using the footway and/or road please contact us, so arrangements can be made to assist you.

Vehicle Removal

We would ask that you do not park within the confines of the works or any areas that have had “no parking” cones put out before the start of the works and for the duration of the works. Failure to do so will result in your vehicle being moved.

  • Vehicle access will be prohibited during these times within the area of works.
  • Only when it is safe to do so, resident access will be maintained within the road closure extent outside of the area of works.
  • Should you require your vehicle during the dates of work we would recommend parking in an alternative location.  Please note that Isle of Wight Council Parking Services, will not be enforcing the 24-hour maximum stay restriction in Godshill car park.
  • “No Parking” cones will be placed out on Phase 1 the night prior to works commencing.
  • No pedestrians or cyclists through route.
  • Pedestrian access for residents and businesses will be maintained where safety allows. Expect delays.

In an Emergency

Emergency vehicle access will be maintained and we will assist the emergency services to safely pass through the site, should they need to access the works area in the event of an emergency.

Waste Collection Including Commercial Waste

Please ensure your waste is on the kerbside before 7am to enable its collection or contact your service provider to make alternative arrangements with them.

Location / Phasing Plan

Parking During the Works

Island Roads have liaised directly with the Isle of Wight Council Parking Services, who will not be enforcing the 24-hour maximum stay restriction in Godshill car park. Please note that several spaces will be required to store plant, machinery and materials during the works.

Final Carriageway Resurfacing Works

Please note that the works due to be undertaken by the end of 2026 do not represent the final stage of the project. Though the road will be restored to a good condition, a resurfacing crew will return in the Spring of 2027 to complete the final surface course works.  This work will be carried out overnight to minimise disruption.

Further information, including programme details and dates, will be provided once arrangements have been finalised closer to the time.

Why The Reconstruction Works Cannot Be Undertaken At Night

The works are being carried out during daytime hours as this provides the safest and most efficient working conditions, due to the depth of the excavations. Better visibility improves safety for our workforce, reduces risks of damaging underground services such as water, electric, gas and telecom cables.  It also ensures materials and support services are readily available throughout the operation. Daytime working also helps minimise potential delays caused by adverse weather conditions, particularly the cold, especially during these winter months. In addition, these are inherently noisy construction activities and undertaking them during the day helps reduce disturbance to residents compared with carrying out the works overnight in this urban residential area.
