A Big Thank You to both Alison Yearling and Steve Hartley who came to the session. They were great Ambassadors for the all inclusive sport of Bowls.
They talked to 14 young bowlers and their parents about their own personal visual impairment and how they manage it to be able to play bowls at a high level.
Using a centre string on the rink, a monocular, the clock system and muscle memory - all vital when they deliver their bowls to achieve the required lengths - as well as good communication skill’s between themselves.
The pair who are part of the para England squad for the world games in Australia this summer played pairs with the young bowlers being rotated every 3 ends.
Everyone enjoyed the experience and there were some challenging ends for all.
This unique experience will remain with these young bowlers and some of the skills demonstrated especially the clock system and the communication skills required will be no doubt be useful in the future.
At the end of the session the children wished the pair good luck in Australia and said that they had learnt new things and enjoyed the opportunity to meet them and of course Kingsley Steve’s Guide Dog.
It is certainly an experience that we will be hoping to do again in the future.
