PLANNED MAINTENANCE – Update 14th May 2024

We have some major items of planned essential maintenance coming up and we apologise to all our users for the inconvenience these works this will cause.

Reroofing of the Small Hall

The timberwork for the Small Hall needs to be replaced and we will also take the opportunity to bring the insulation up to modern standards.  The reroofing of the Small Hall started on 13th May 2024 and (weather permitting) should take one week.  During that time the Small Hall will remain open but there will be unavoidable noise from the roofers working above the hall.  There will also be some scaffolding on the southern aspect (gable end) of the building outside the Small Hall.  We have coned off the three parking bays outside the kitchen for the contractor’s vehicle and timber.

Asbestos Removal From the Projector Room

The projector room is above the front porch and is only accessible from the flat roof – it is one of the last areas known to have asbestos in the hall (the other is not in an accessible area).  The work started on 14th May 2024 and was expected to be done entirely from the projector room and not to disturb the inside of the Main Hall but on trying to remove some fixed asbestos panelling the contractors displaced one of the two wooden covers leading into the Main Hall.  As the hall was in use they stopped and cleaned up in the main hall.  They have also removed all the asbestos from the exposed hatch leaving just plaster behind the wooden cover.  They have sealed off the inside of the panelled area so that there is no risk of asbestos getting into the main hall.   We are arranging for them to return to complete the work when we can ensure the Main Hall is unoccupied.  In the meantime the left hand panel (viewed from inside the Main Hall), high up on the wall above the front door is partially displaced.

We have been assured that the panel is safe both from the risk of falling, further debris coming into the hall and also from the risk of asbestos: therefore the Main Hall remains in use.

Kitchen Repairs

We are awaiting a date for this final part of the repairs following the accident to the rear of the hall last September – we will update this notice once we know when this will start.  This should last 5 days and during that time the kitchen will be open but only partially.  A section of the kitchen will be screened off and the gas hob, Lincat Water Boiler, Microwave and Warming oven will be inaccessible as will storage cupboards 10, 11, 12 and 13.  The door between the kitchen and lobby will be closed off and access from the Main Hall to the kitchen will have to be via the Small Hall.  The sink, dishwasher, kettle and the older hot water urn will be available.
