Bogus Meter Checks

Nottinghamshire County Council Trading Standards have had information that there is a male knocking on doors within the Mansfield District asking to enter properties to check gas meters. The male was reported to be wearing a high visibility vest, with Nottinghamshire County Council on the back. Nottinghamshire County Council would not normally conduct meter checks.

Most gas meters are outside, if this is the case then the caller should not need to enter the property.

If your gas meter is inside, then genuine meter readers from the Gas or Electricity companies will want you to check their identity before you let them in. Never call the phone number on their ID card to check them out. Ask the caller to wait outside, shut the door and find the company number on the internet. If they’re genuine, they’ll understand.

In the past, bogus callers have informed residents that they need access to the meter, in order to trick residents in allowing them entry. If you have any concerns, then do not let the caller into your property. Lock your door and report the caller.

To bring a matter to the attention of Trading Standards or for consumer advice, please contact the Citizens Advice Consumer Service on 0808 223 1133. This number is free from mobiles and landlines.
