Traffic and Road Safety
The Parish Council has received the following update regarding planned works at Longdon Upon Tern No.1 Bridge from Telford and Wrekin Council:
We are preparing to undertake detailed site investigation and preliminary works on the structure and these works are scheduled to take place on 12th & 13th February 2026.
To allow the works to be completed safely, a full road closure will be in place during this period. However, access will be maintained for pedestrians, cyclists, and equine traffic throughout the works.
The planned activities include a range of detailed surveys, trial pit excavations, and vegetation clearance on the structure and along the approach verges.
The Parish Council will be in contact with Highways regarding planned diversion routes and signage. Updates will be posted on the Parish Council website and Facebook page. If you have any queries or concerns please contact the Clerk on rodingtonpc@gmail.com
Below is a traffic management plan for the proposed works. Telford and Wrekin have, at the Parish Council's request, added a lot more additional signs.
It has been confirmed that after the works are completed, the temporary lights will be reinstated and barriers will remain in place.
Access to rural transport is vital to communities like Rodington and Longdon-upon-Tern.
The villages are served mostly by single lane roads and therefore cannot cope in most cases with high volumes of traffic. Therefore, the Parish Council supports the improvements to rural transport and more sustainable connections around the Borough of Telford & Wrekin and the town of Shrewsbury.
Speeding within the villages is a major problem. We asked specifically which roads residents felt were being abused by speeding vehicles and some of the most common areas were Somerwood, the B5063 through Longdon, Rodington Heath and Walcot Road to name a few. The Parish Council is determined to keep our community safe, and we are doing a number of things to tackle issues around road safety, with installation of speed indication devices and improved speed signage, and residents have already shown an inspiring ambition to support the Parish Council through offering to volunteer for community speed safety groups.
We feel that the key ingredient to achieving any success in reducing speed of vehicles in the area and improve public safety is through partnership working. We have a clear agenda to engage with all businesses, organisations and authorities to maximise our efforts in protecting our community and making our Parish a better, safer place to live and work.
The Parish Council received notification of committed support from the Director for Neighbourhood Services (with responsibility for Highways) in September 2022 for a proposed Highway Safety Scheme in the village.
A residents survey was completed, which resulted in the suggestions as listed below. These suggestions have since been reviewed by Telford and Wrekin Council and the response is also listed below.
