Opening of the Green 2024 season

On Saturday 13th of April our chairman Stewart Maddocks welcomed everyone to our opening of the green. Stewart started off by asking everyone to join him in a minute’s silence for our good friend Colin Place who passed away recently. Colin was a very well-respected member of our club and will be greatly missed by all; he did however leave us holding the titles of; Men’s Champion and Club Champion, both of which he was very proud of.

Stewart thanked everyone who had helped over the winter, to ensure the green and surrounds of the club were ready to start. It is just unfortunate that the weather has been unforgiving, which stopped us being able to have our usual 'spider' and competition.

Stewart then handed over to our club captain Alan Horwood.

Alan started by giving us a detailed update on the proposed amalgamation; this have not gone too well at the Borough side of things but, they are hopeful that they can sort out their problems and we can then proceed with the next steps in the process.

Alan continued to inform us of the news that due to low numbers of members this season we are not going to be able to have 2 over 60’s teams in the league. It was felt it was better to make this decision at the start of the season rather than to play a few games and find we could not field enough players and consequently have to cancel games. On a more positive it was felt that we should have enough players to fulfil all the fixtures for East of Exe and all friendlies. Alan hoped that everyone would have a very enjoyable season and that members would support the club by putting their names down to play as much as possible.

Alan then handed over to Stewart again, this time in his role as President.

Stewart thanked Alan for all the hard work he has put in organising working parties, also the steering committee for their work behind the scenes. It was then time for Stewart to officially open the green by rolling out the first wood, thank you to Jill Horwood for taking the photos of this which are below.

After all the ceremonies were completed, we congregated in the club house to enjoy refreshments of hot cross buns, cupcakes and drinks. Thank you for these.

I for one am looking forward to being out on the green playing bowls, let’s hope the weather will be kind to us, so we can have many happy hours together.
