Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service Update
Droxford Village Community
This is a round-up of news from across Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service.
Pack a picnic - not a barbecue
Disposable barbecues pose a fire risk and this risk increases during prolonged periods of hot and sunny weather.
Group Manager for Prevention, John Amos said:
"We’re pleased to see some retailers removing them from sale and see this as a positive step to making the countryside safer.
The grass and undergrowth are incredibly dry right now, which means fires can start very easily, and spread very rapidly.
Last month alone we dealt with almost 680 fires in the open and our firefighters, control room colleagues and support staff have been working exceptionally hard in challenging conditions.
Don’t light campfires, bonfires or barbecues in the countryside, parks, commons or our outdoor spaces and do dispose of your rubbish - including glass bottles and smoking materials – responsibly.
We know people want to enjoy time outdoors when the weather is nice but please pack a picnic, not a disposable barbecue."

Are your kids aware of the dangers of playing with fire?
Make sure you take the time this summer break to educate your children about the dangers of playing with and lighting fires.
With lots of free time over the holiday period it’s important we talk to young people and make them aware of how quickly a small fire can escalate out of control in these conditions.
Keep your glass and mirrors out of the sun
We are reminding people to take the time to ensure that glass ornaments and mirrors aren’t left near windows where they could catch and reflect sunlight.
Although these type of incidents are fairly unique, we have seen a number of fires caused by sunlight reflecting through glass recently.
