Working Together to Make Linton's Roads Safer

Road safety is a priority for Linton Parish Council, and Community Speedwatch is one of the ways local residents can help encourage safer driving within the parish.

Community Speedwatch is a volunteer-led initiative that enables trained members of the community to monitor vehicle speeds at approved locations using speed detection equipment supplied by Kent Police. The aim is not to issue fines, but to educate drivers and encourage them to slow down, helping to make our roads safer for everyone.

 

👥 What is Community Speedwatch?

Community Speedwatch is supported by Kent Police and relies on trained local volunteers working together to monitor speeding vehicles.

During each session, volunteers record the registration numbers of vehicles travelling above the speed limit. This information is passed to Kent Police, who write to the registered keeper of the vehicle to advise them that their speed has been recorded.

Drivers who repeatedly appear during Community Speedwatch sessions may be subject to further attention from Kent Police.

 

🚸 Why is Community Speedwatch Important?

Excessive speed is one of the most common concerns raised by residents and can increase both the likelihood and severity of road traffic collisions.

Community Speedwatch helps to:

🚗 Encourage motorists to drive within the speed limit.

🚸 Improve safety for pedestrians, cyclists and horse riders.

🏡 Help protect residents living along busy roads.

🤝 Raise awareness of speeding within the community.

👮 Support Kent Police by identifying speeding hotspots.

 

📊 Does Community Speedwatch Work?

Yes. Community Speedwatch has been successfully introduced in communities across Kent and throughout the UK.

Research has shown that visible Speedwatch sessions encourage drivers to reduce their speed, particularly where monitoring takes place regularly. While the scheme is educational rather than enforcement-based, it has proved to be an effective way of improving driver behaviour and increasing awareness of speed limits.

Community Speedwatch has previously operated successfully within Linton, with trained volunteers carrying out monitoring sessions at approved locations throughout the parish.

The Parish Council recognises the benefits of the scheme and is committed to supporting safer roads within the village.

We hope to re-launch Community Speedwatch in Linton in the future, and updates will be published on this website and the Parish Council's news page as plans progress.

Community Speedwatch depends on local volunteers who are willing to give a small amount of their time to help improve road safety.

No previous experience is required, as full training and equipment are provided through the scheme.
