Maldon A Division 1
Fixtures 2026
May
Tuesday 12th Home v Tiptree Jobserve A - Maldon A opened their season with a home fixture against Tiptree Jobserve. The rink of newcomer Paul Callow, and seasoned members Carole Ash, William Wallis and skip Dave Torrice were quickly into the game. A fairly close first nine ends saw Maldon leading by 11 shots to 7 before pulling away to lead 20 shots to 9 with 3 ends to go. Tiptree then pulled back to give a final score of 20 - 16. All four played well with Paul Callow at lead looking very much at home. The other rink of Ken Varney, Cherry Richardson, Colin Wall and skip Kevin Cornwell had a close game up to the fifteenth end, leading 10-8. But Maldon then pulled away over the final three ends to finish with a 17 - 9 win.
A typical performance from all four bowlers, all playing well and contributing to a hard-fought but well-deserved win. So an excellent start to the league campaign with a 8-0 points victory. Well done to all eight bowlers.
Tuesday 19th Away v Chelmsford A - the A team travelled to Chelmsford to play against very strong opposition.
The rink of Paul Callow, Cherry Richardson, Ron Thackray and Tony Wallis had a superb result. 1 - 7 down after 7 ends, they pulled back to lead 9 - 7 after 11 ends and from there they totally out bowled the Chelmsford four to run out winners by 19 shots to 11. A fantastic performance.
The other rink with Paul Brooks, Carole Ash, Steve Morrison and Dave Torrice were not so fortunate. After 13 ends they were 6 - 14 down, but holding 4 on the 14th. However the last wood came in and cut it down to one shot. At 7 - 14 it was too much to pull back and the final score was 8 - 20.
So a loss of 2 - 6 by 4 shots. No disgrace considering the quality of the Opposition.
Here’s to next week.
Tuesday 26th Home v Great Baddow A -Another very tough game against Great Baddow. Maldon were once again without several key players. Both rinks battled bravely but were out bowled. Steve Morrison’s rink did come back from 2- 11 down to 10 - 16 with two ends to go but could not close the gap and the final score was 10 - 20.
Dave Torrice’s rink had a similar experience, and after leading early on 5 - 3, they eventually lost 6 - 20.
So a final result of 16 shots to 40 was hard to take but it does reflect the quality of the opposition.
June
Tuesday 2nd Away v Stock & Buttsbury A - Maldon A travelled to Stock and achieved a much needed win. The rink of Paul Callow, Cherry Richardson, Steve Morrison and Barry McDonagh scored 7 shots on the second end and never looked back, always in front. Leading 20 - 11 on the last end and holding shot, Stock took out the shot wood to claim 5, giving a final score of 20 - 16.
Carole Ash, Ron Thackray, Ken Varney and Kevin Cornwell recovered from being 7 - 0 down to storm back and lead 10 - 8. Stock then regained the lead but Maldon kept in touch and secured 3 shots on the last three ends to secure an eighteen all draw.
So a morale boosting 7 - 1 victory achieved. Well done to all eight players.
Tuesday 9th Away v Falcon A - Accident on A12 meant one team member arrived 10 minutes late. Falcon refused to allow the 15 minute delay so one rink played with 3 and lost 25% of their shots. Final score 20-44. Falcon played well but unsporting not to wait for delayed player to arrive.
Bring on the return fixture at home!
Tuesday 16th Home v Silver End - what a bounce back from the previous week. And 8-0 win against strong opponents. Both rinks played exceptionally well. Colin Wall’s rink were never behind and won 18-14.
Dave Torrice’s were behind the whole game until the last end when they scored 4 shots to win 14-11. An overall score of 32-25.
Thursday 18th KO Shield Preliminary - Home v Maldon C - was unable to get a team so conceded the match.
Tuesday 23rd Away v Chelmsford B - Another 8-0 win. Barry McDonagh’s rink led all the way through a very close game and eventually won by 2 shots - 17-15.
Dave Torrice’s rink had a stormer. They won 16 of the 18 ends to run out winners by 30 shots to 5.
Tuesday 30th Away v Tiptree Jobserve - a close game on both rinks on a somewhat challenging green.
Yet again Dave Torrice’s rink battled away to win 16-12.
A welcome return for Kevin Cornwell who skipped the other rink. Very close up to the thirteenth end when we pulled away to lead 23-18. Tiptree scored three on the last end to give a final score 23-18, and overall 39-30. Another 8-0 win means we now sit in second place in the league, two points behind the leaders Chelmsford A who we play next week at home.
July
Tuesday 3rd 1st Round KO Shield - should have played Maldon C but the A team could not get a team.
Tuesday 7th Home v Chelmsford A - Maldon faced league leaders Chelmsford A. Another very good performance by Maldon with both rinks refusing to give in against a strong opposition.
The rink of Paul Callow, Ron Thackray (who had a very good game), Ken Varney and and Dave Torrice were neck and neck until the sixteenth end when they found themselves 5 shots down. Give in? Absolutely not! They scored 3 shots on the last two ends to lose by two shots, 13 - 15.
Meanwhile the other rink of Carole Ash, William Wallis, Steve Morrison and Colin Wall also had a tough game and they too found themselves five shots down, after thirteen ends. Throw in the towel? No way! They won the next five ends to give a final scoreline of 16 - 14. So the match ended with both teams scoring 29 shots, giving both teams 4 match points.
At one stage it looked like Maldon could lose 8 - 0. But this team does not give in easily. And this is why they are only two points behind the league leaders.
Well done to all eight players.
Tuesday 14th Away v Great Baddow A - Maldon A travelled to Great Baddow hoping to avenge a 16 - 40 defeat earlier in the season, and so it proved to be in the most dramatic fashion.
Carole Ash, Cherry RiChardson, Steve Morrison and skip Barry McDonagh all played their part in keeping control of their match. After sixteen ends they were 9 shots ahead. Conceding 3 on the next end meant they had a 6 shot lead with one end to go. And then it all went a little bit dark. As Barry went to bowl his first wood, Baddow were holding 6. As he went to bowl his second wood, Maldon were 7 shots down. In came the wood to get second wood and save the day. “Hero” shouted his team - “phew that was close” muttered Barry. So a final score of 22 shots to 17.
The other rink, Paul Callow, Ron Thackray, Ken Varney and skip Dave Torrice, had a close game all through and on the last end were one shot down which would have drawn their rink. But true to form Dave produced a superb wood to take out the shot wood to give a final score of 16 shots to 13. “He’s a superhero” shouted his team!
Drama indeed. An overall win 8 - 0 by 38 shots to 30.
Another excellent team performance puts us level on points at the top of th e table with Silver End. And over the last five games Maldon have secured 36 match points out of a possible 40. Well done one and all!
