Wednesday 6th Away v Falcon B
Wednesday 13th Away v Great Baddow B - - Well done to Tony Broom and his team of Alan F, Frank W and Brian C last night winning their match away to Gt Baddow 18 - 14.
Dave B, Graham P, Mike O and Richard B, going into the last end, were winning 18-14 and holding shot when their skip had the shot of the night taking the jack back and gaining 4 shots. Final score 18-18.
Simon A, Steve N, Phil A and Peter P went into the last end drawing 15-15. Also holding shot on the last end when their skip came in and took the point. Final score 15-16. Unlucky not to get all 10 points but a good result overall.
Wednesday 20th Home v Danbury B - As a result of the A team being short of players which had a knock on effect for both the B and C teams every Club player was on a team sheet. However Captain of the day did not have to worry as the result was a convincing win for Maldon C 67-38 resulting in them taking an 8-2 win on points.
Wednesday 27th Away v Ingatestone - The first of two visits this week to Ingatestone for a few of the C team and it proved a difficult evening.
The tricky green proved to be quite a test for all players but the home advantage for Ingatestone proved to be crucial. Dave B, Trevor M, Peter P, and Helen P had a rather difficult night having to content with the both the varying lines to the Jack and many wicks for the opposing skip. At one point Trevor was seen to throw his hat to the ground in un believing exasperation as the head changed from 3 up to 2 down after a double wick in!!! The final score on rink 4: let's just say we came second!
Rink 3 had Simon A, David S, Bobby B and Steve N and also found it difficult to find a line in but we didn't have to cope with a wicking machine on rink 4. Dropping 6 points on the first two ends did not bode well. However, winning the next 3 ends to draw level calmed the nerves. We couldn't find any consistency and it wasn't until end 15 that the fame was within a point. We did not score another point so we managed to grasp defeat from the jaws of victory!
All in all we have had better nights, going down 26-45 on aggregate and 8-0 in the score book. We will reverse that when we play them at home.
June
Wednesday 3rd Home v PML - as we prepared to take on PML who had not lost a game all season our illustrious captain, Maurice, turned up. It was good to see him and he was warmly welcomed back. He took the Spectators bench and the C team players got to work. Barney, Dave B, Graham Sand Alan F came out of the traps like a hungry greyhound. 7 shots without reply set them up to what became a procession of winning ends. The opposition only managed to take a total of 5 ends which highlighted the dominance of this Maldon four. The rink next door saw Simon, Richard B, Malcolm J and Phil A have a more steady start. All pretty close till the 8th end when the Maldon 4 went on a run of 7 unanswered ends, stretching out a lead of 10. However, we then could not buy an end and PML came back at us taking the last 5 ends. Fortunately the damage was done in the mid section of the game and we hung on for a 17-14 win. So 4 points secured.
On the third rink Tony B, Peter P, Len T and Peter W were finding things rather difficult. Getting hold o the mat proved tricky and so the score began to slip away from the,. However, the never say did attitude of the Maldon C team saw them pick up the final two ends resulting ina final score of 13-28. Overall Maldon won 58-52 and 8-2 on points.
Wednesday 10th Home v Chelmsford B - On a very wet evening Maldon welcomed Chelmsford B team. Rink 4 with Davie Bruce as skip managed a win of 17-10 shots but on rink 5 it was a different story an managed to get 10 shots and Chelmsford 24. Rink 6 started well and were 10-3 up by the 10th end but unfortunately did not score for the next 8 ends and ended up with a 10 shots to Chelmsford's 20. The aggregate score of 37-54 meant that Maldon went down 2-6. However, on a positive note they did not get wet.
Wednesday 17th Away v Billericay - Maldon C travelled to Billericay to take on not only their team but the trek from the car park, think this nearly killed Frank! Richard B was surprised to find out that the would be skipping Brian C, Dave By and Frank, he stepped up with confidence. The game was tight affair right to the final end when, being a shot down, Richard sent his final wood into the head, taking the shot and securing a well fought draw.
On the next rink Simon, Mike O, Derek B and Steve N had a slow start and were 7-0 down after 3 ends. The next 4 ends saw Maldon win each one and take a 2 shot lead. Although Maldon were dominating the head after the front end bowlers had played Billericay's skip Brian H, kept sending down bowls that frustrated us. Going into the 17th end we were all square on 13 all but unfortunately lost the final two ends and went down by 3 shots.
Dave B, Peter P, Graham P and Alan F had a smoother ride not being behind after the second end. They held their nerve and got over the line by 6 shots and secured the 4 shot lead for the overall score and 2 points for the win. The final score being 7-3 in Maldon's favour.
Wednesday 24th 1st Round Marconi Cup - Home v Falcon B - postponed due to heat.
July
Wednesday 1st Home v Billericay - It was only 2 weeks ago that the Maldon C team travelled to Billericay and secured a close 7-3 win.
We were looking forward to the return match on our green. Another close game was to be witnessed on all 3 rinks. Barney, Phil, Derek and Alan were neck and neck being 12-12 on the 12th end. However, by the 16th end they had let the opposition pull ahead by 7 shots. Maldon put another 5 shots on the scoreboard over the final 2 ends but it wasn't enough to catch up. A 19-22 loss, close but Richard B, Peter P, Malcolm and Steve N saw a close start trading one shot for one shot. However, Billericay had a purple patch over the next 4 ends and put on 11 shots without reply. Maldon did regain the mat but only to lose it and drop a 4 over 2 3nds. The gap had widened to 16-4 by the 10th end. However, Richard and his hardy crew dug in and rallied but unfortunately too late, eventually losing 15-20.
Dave Bruce, skipped Peter W at lead, Brian C and Graham S. Prior to the game Dave B had reported that he had not lost his rink in the C&D league this season but going to the final end the record was under threat, being one down, 14-15. However, on the final end Maldon gained one shot making it a 15-15 draw. The total result was in Billericay's favour 57-47 and a 1-9 loss.
Wednesday 8th Away v Chelmsford B - On a 'quirky' green all three rinks started well despite some difficult lines. Mike O skipped Brain C, Graham P and Len T and kept the game tight right up to the final end. Going into the 18th end only two down, the game was within reach. This is when they decided to have their worst end and dropped 4 shots so going down by 6. A welcome return of Maurice Willettt to the fray as he skipped Richard B at 3, Peter P and Alan F leading. With Maurice's inspired inspired guidance and the other three playing solid shots they were never headed.
However, although Chelmsford B made a valiant charge over the last few ends, Maldon held onto win by one point. Simon, Dave B, Ton y B and Phil A made up the final rink and, despite the rink, shot into a commanding lead being 9-4 up by the 7th end. We slowed somewhat and let Chelmsford back in and we approached the 18th end all square at 14 all.
This is when the opposition lead decided to bowl two great shots both on the Jack. Phil decided to have his worst end! Tony sent down two beautiful bowls which also crowded the kitty. It was a measure for shot as Dave stepped onto the mat. Two fine bowls threaded through the 'wall' and landed close. All Simon had to do with his final two woods was to use Dave's bowls to come in onto the head and take the end. It wasn't to be and after a measure Maldon went down by one point. Overall score 42-47 and 2-8 loss.
Wednesday 15th Away v PML - I'll keep this brief. 2/3 of the rinks came second leaving a heavy weight for Dave B's rink to shoulder. However, they valiantly took on the challenge and promptly took a 6 and raising the hopes of the rest of the slightly downbeat C teamers. Going into the final end Maldon were only 3 shots adrift overall, so all to play for. It wasn't to be and PML took an overall win 37-41 and 8-2 loss. Another frustrating close finish.
