Emergency Plan

Puncknowle, Swyre and West Bexington Parish Council has adopted an Emergency & Local Incident Plan to help the community prepare for, respond to and recover from emergencies that may affect the parish.

The plan has been developed to support effective communication, coordination and local awareness during incidents such as severe weather, flooding, loss of utilities, public health emergencies or other local incidents. It recognises that the responsibility for dealing with emergencies rests primarily with the emergency services, Dorset Council, the Environment Agency and utility providers, depending on the nature of the incident.

The role of the Parish Council, as set out in the plan, is to:

  • Act as a local point of contact for information
  • Support the flow of information between residents and statutory authorities
  • Share local knowledge with emergency responders where appropriate
  • Help identify and support vulnerable residents during longer‑term incidents

The plan is not a replacement for the emergency services, and residents should always call 999 in an emergency. It does not require residents or volunteers to place themselves at risk or take on responsibilities that belong to professional responders.

The Emergency & Local Incident Plan includes:

  • An overview of local risks within the parish
  • Guidance on communications during an emergency
  • Principles for supporting vulnerable residents
  • Appendices covering flooding, severe weather, pandemic response, loss of utilities, defibrillators and key contact details

The plan is reviewed and updated regularly to ensure it remains current and relevant.
