Reports Basildon "A"

Friday 2nd September, away to Hadleigh, won 7-0, 77-32 shots

Last match of the season, on the notoriously difficult Hadleigh green, with  some team members unavailable.   Subs stepped up magnificently to provide a win on all rinks, very well done. Our final position in the table will depend on other teams playing next week but we have a good chance of finishing above the bottom two.

Jim, Graham and skip Mark, allowed their opposition only 5 winning ends and had some high scoring ends - two 5's and three 4's.  Great result with a massive 35-13 scoreline.

Mike, Doug McDowall (in his first league match) and Skip Norman had a very tight game, with the two sides only a couple of shots apart throughout.   However we worked hard and  winning the last four ends, totalling 6 shots gave us a 17-10 victory.  Very good team work.

Ian, Jenny and skip Brian didn't have the best of performances but the opposition were not great either, on an especially difficult rink. Hadleigh only won 6 ends so Billericay won 25-9.

Tuesday 30th August, away to Runwell Hospital, won 5-2, 47-41

A repeat of last weeks game with some slight team changes - a very good win on a green with little grass and wandering woods - the worst green we have played on this season, but somehow we mastered it - excellent effort giving us a real chance of staying up.  One more match to go this Friday.

Mike, Norman and Val with a very solid performance, winning 11 of the ends and a 17-10 victory.

Jim, Graham and Terry perhaps not playing at their best,  won 6 ends to lose 13-20

Ian, Jenny and Brian in a close game till half way, 7-9 down, but controlling the second half for a 17-11 win

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Thursday 25th August, home to Runwell Hospital, lost 2-5 , 50-61

With the opposition in the upper side of the league, we did well to gain some important points and actually had a chance of more.

Jean, Ian and Graham ahead for the first half in a close game then 11-14 down at the 14th, 17-14 up with two ends to go and dropping a 2 then a 5 on the last to lose 17-21.

Jim, Jenny and Terry also ahead in the first half, 15 all at the 15th, then losing two 4's to slip to a 17-25 defeat.

Mike, Norman and Val behind for the first half but catching up level on the 16th, and shading the last ends to win by one shot , 16-15 - well done and a valuable two points.

---------------------------------------------------------------

18th August , home v Sth Benfleet A, lost 0-7, 30-68

Playing the top team, who had their good players, we were outclassed in every department.  Thanks to Mark subbing at a late stage

Mike, Ian and Norman, losing 12-28

Jim, Jenny and Mark winning 7 ends but dropping 10 shots  in two ends, losing 8-25

Jean, Graham and Brian losing 10-25

--------------------------------------------------------------------

5th August, Home, v Wickford, lost 2-5, 46-53 shots

A close match with Wickford winning on the last ends, and now we are struggling to avoid relegation, being 3rd from bottom..

Tony, Graham and skip Brian behind most of the match on a very difficult rink - but coming through to win at the end 15-11 - a good team effort.

Jim, Jenny and Terry always a bit behind and loosing two ends with 4's.  Final result 15-24

Mike, Norman and Val well behind 4-14 and 10 ends but fighting back well to level the scores on the 15th (15 all) but just loosing in the last 3 ends - 16-18

28th July, home to South Benfleet B, 2-5 points, 41-52 shots

Another changed team with the C&D tour and illness/holidays affecting our selections.

Jim, Tony and Terry always ahead winning 13 of the ends to win 24-10

Mike, Jeff Cassidy (debut game for Bas A),and skip Norman only won 3 ends - 4-27 loss

Jean, Ian and Graham had a close game, with low scores, 8 all at 9, 10 all at 13; 12 all at 16, but a 3 dropped on the 17th was decisive and a loss 13-15.  Well tried .

22nd July , v Hadleigh, home, loss 2-5 points, 49-57

A number of team changes with the C&D tour and illness and some big swings in the games

Mike, Ian and skip Rex  well beaten including a 6 on end seven - loosing 8-21

Jim, Mark Wilsmer (in his debut game for Bas A) and Terry were well behind at half way (5-14) but took charge for the second half, including two 5's and won 25-17, great turnaround.

Jean, Graham and Gary were 14-8 ahead with only 4 ends to go , but dropped a 5 and a 4 to lose 16-19 ,

15th July , Pitsea A, Murrayfield Cup, away - loss 34-44 shots

Pleasant evening except for the wandering woods and bumpy green, which we never mastered and a big loss, even with being given 10 shots for the non-appearance of their third triple.    Good tea and nice to see some old friends from the indoor game.

Jim, Jenny and Terry scored a 7 on the second end but that was just all about all the good news whith the opposition slowly scoring to win 18-14

Mike, Graham and Brian were never in the game, a poor performance, only winning 4 ends to lose 10-26.

----------------------------------------------------------------

8h July v Sth Benfleet, away, lost 2-5 league points , 40-58 shots

Nice weather, but Sth Benfleet A are a good team.    Well done for our one winning rink

Jean, Graham and Gary always comfortably ahead, only wining 8 of the 18 ends but always restricting Sth Benfleet scoring, so eventually winning 18-12

Jim, Mike and Terry  always behind , winning 6 ends and loosing 10-25

Tony, Norman and Val were 11-5 ahead at half way ,  but only scored once more while Sth Benfleet scored freely - us loosing 12 -21

-------------------------------------------

30th June v Rayleigh away - 0-7 points, overall shots 47- 66

With 10 Billericay bowlers arriving, Brian could take a rest.  Nice evening but as expected Rayleigh at home performed the best and had a significant number of higher scoring ends with 4's.

Jean, Graham and sub Gary ahead at 8 ends and even gaining a 6 on the 15th, but were generally outscored by Rayleigh including two 3's and two 4's, Billericay finally loosing 21-24

Jim, Norman and Terry won 8 of the ends but the opponents collection of 3's and a 4 won the game - final score 11-20

Mike, Ian and Tony  won 8 ends but loosing a 5 and a 4 was decisive and the final score was 15-22

-------------------------------------

24th June, v Wickford away;  win 4-3 league points.  Overall shots was 60-56

Nice weather but weird bumpy rinks with random wandering woods!  At half way the match already looked lost. However a  terrific team effort and persistent hard work to achieve a win.  Well done all.

Jim, Jenny and Terry, end rink,  were always just a shot or two ahead then 13 all on the 13th but a good finish with a crucial 4 meant a 21-14 winning scoreline.

Mike, Norman and Val were 10 shots down after 3 ends, conceding a 6 on the 3rd.  This was hauled back with 4's on the 10th and 11th ends to go ahead, then the opposition had 5 consecutive end wins to be 24-17 ahead, only to be pegged back again by a good finish from Billericay to keep the final deficit to 3; a 21-24 loss.  Persistent work on a very puzzling rink.

Ian, Graham and Brian also started horribly, 0-9 down after 5 ends.  Grumpy Brian's woods didn't go where they were wanted but the team  persisted and eventually improved, catching Wickford on the last end to get a 18 all draw.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

23rd June v Castle Point C, Murrayfield Cup 2nd round - home win 57-38

Half way through, the game looked pretty tight with the teams only separated by a couple of shots overall but we stepped up our game to win convincingly,, winning on all rinks.

Mike, Ian and Tony, a scratch team, struggled at first, 1-8 down after 6 ends then pulled level at 11 ends (9 all), then sprinted away to win 21-11 - well done.

Jim, Jenny and Terry with a close match, mainly slightly behind but finally taking the lead with a good 3 on the last - 17-15 win.

Jean, Graham and Brian - confident start 11-1 after just 6 ends, not so good middle so 12-11 up after 12, good finish to win 19-12.

------------------------------------------

17th June, v South Benfleet B, away, lost 0-7 league points

Very hot evening, accurate, good speed green and we were perhaps unlucky to loose by just by one shot on two of our rinks.

Jim, Jenny and skip Terry in a close game throughout, never more than 2 shots difference.  2 shots up for the last end,  our long jack but woods in the ditch, then the opposition holding 3 bowled the last wood, trailed the jack and very nearly gave it back!  Excitement!    Lost 16-17.

Mike, Ian and Brian always a little behind but a tight last end brought a possibility of winning with Brian's last wood - but a miss and a there just wasn't enough shots  - lost 14-15

Tony, Graham and Val struggled and were only able to win 4 ends -  a loss of 8-24.

-------------------------------------------------

2nd June v Castlepoint , away - won 4-3 league points

Team absences meant reserves and emergency reserves, then a poor, very slow green, with woods wandering about but we scraped an overall win by one shot!  We finished much better than the opposition with a combined 12 shots over the last 2 ends. Well done as we usually lose to this team away.

Mike, Norman and skip Gary had a good first half 11-4 up at 10 ends, but slipped to 11-12 by the 14th then finished well to win 17-13.

David Goodall, Graham, and skip Brian were loosing 3-13 at half way but scored 10 shots in 3 ends to change the character of the game, eventually loosing 17-19.

Jim,  Jenny and Terry also well down after loosing the first 4 ends for 9 shots.  A good mid game run of 10 shots in 4 ends brought us back into contention and 3 on the last made a draw at 18 all.

13th May - Murrayfield cup 1st Round, comfortable win 66-35, winning on all rinks

Jim, Norman and skip Tony had a bit of a up/down swings match heading 10-5 at 6 ends,  then 17-9 at 12, to 18-20 down at the 17th after dropping a four.  Then a magnificent three on the last end to sneak a 21-20 win

Graham, Jenny and skip Terry always in control helped by a 6 on end 12, and cruising to a 25-6 win.  I was privileged to see the shot of the day by Terry, with the opposition holding very close to the jack and Terry's last wood being a wonderful draw through many shorter bowls to win the end.

Jean, Ian and skip Brian just a little better and consistent than the opposition moving slowly ahead for a 19-9 win.  Good leading by Jean.

---------------------------------------------------------

12th May, v Rayleigh, Home, win 5-2 league points

A pleasant though sometimes dark cloudy evening, a bit cold and our second match and another win, complete with bonus point 48-39.

Mike, Graham and skip Brian won 12 of the 18 ends , 17-9 shots.  Mike's good leading made the difference and though the opposing 2/3 Davey wife/husband combination showed their excellent skills, our advantage of 'woods in the head' shone through.

Jim, Jenny and Skip Terry were always in front  and in control, winning 20-11

Tony, Pam and Val were 5 all at the 8th end  but the opposition got more of a grip in the second half and ran out  19-11 winners

----------------------------------------------------------

5th May v Castle Point, Home, win 4-3 league points

Rather cold, always tricky first match and slow green, but well done with a win against a good first division team.  We won on two rinks  but lost the bonus point by one shot only 47-48

Jean, Ian and skip Brian off to a good start with a five in 2nd end and 13-2 at half way - the opposition then hitting back but we closed out the match  winning 18-12

Jim, Jenny and Skip Terry, always in front and when the opposition closed up, we scored two 4's to run out 20-14 winners

Tony, Norman and Val started well, 5-2 infront after 6 ends then the opposition moved away and with the help of a 5 and a four, won 22-9
