At the end of the 2024 Season Maldon C have been promoted yet again and will be playing in Division 1

May -
Tuesday 13th
Away v Gt Baddow A -Played Great Baddow. Lost 2 - 6 by 2 shots overall. Tony Wallis's rink played against a strong rink and Lost 11 - 23. The other rink with Kevin Cornwell as skip won 23 - 13. A close result against one of the strongest teams in the league.
Tuesday 20th   Away v Danbury C - Maldon came second this week with Danbury C obtaining 32 shots to Maldon's 24.  Points 6 to Danbury and 2 to Maldon.
Tuesday 27th   Home v Falcon A - Maldon C had a good win with 34 shots to Falcon's 27 giving Maldon 8 points.

June
Tuesday 3rd
Away v Billericay A -  Maldon travelled to Billericay hoping to follow up last weeks win. And so it proved, with an overall score of 56 shots to 17.

Both rinks had resounding wins. Colin Wall’s rink raced to an 18-0 lead and never looked back, running out 29 - 8 winners. With Alan Brand, at lead, and Graham Smith both playing particularly well, backed up by Ken Varney, the team were always in control.

The other rink skipped by Kevin Cornwell, also had an impressive win. 3 - 5 down after two ends, they then raced away to a 24 - 5 lead and finally ran out 27 - 9 winners. Carole Ash, Cherry Richardson and Barry McDonagh all contributed well but special mention to skip Cornwell who had an excellent game.

Tuesday 10th  Away v Chelmsford A -

What a roller coaster game this was and it was always going to be a tough one. Chelmsford were top of the table and had not lost a set so far. After 9 ends both rinks were down, 7 - 11 and 3 - 12, 13 shots adrift. But then the fight back started. Tony Wallis’s rink won eight of the last nine ends to storm back and win by 21 shots to 12. Colin Wall’s rink battled on and and pulled the deficit back to  eight shots with a final score of 11 - 19. So the overall result was 32 shots to 31, decided on the very last end. An excellent result against the league leaders and the third win in a row. Well done to all.

Tuesday 17th Home v Silver End - Another nail biter against a strong Silver End team.

The rink of Tony and William Wallis, along with Dave Torrice and Graham Smith, were in total control early and after twelve ends were leading 19 shots to 6. But in the next four ends they conceded 12 shots bringing the score to a nailbiting 19 - 18.

The other rink, Kevin Cornwell, Ken Varney, Barney Britton and Carole Ash, had a much tougher game and after sixteen ends were trailing 12 shots to 14, meaning Maldon were one shot in arrears. One end later and Maldon were still one shot behind. But on the final end Maldon picked up 2 shots and 1 shot to win by 2, securing a 6 - 2 victory. Another very good result and their fourth victory in a row. We now sit in second place.

Thursday 19th - KO Shield Preliminary  Home & Away v Braintree A - The away rink of Dave Torrice, Ron Thackray, Barry McDonagh and William Wallis had a close match and were only 3 shots behind after 15 ends. They then conceded 6 shots in the last three ends to lose 11 - 20, 9 shots adrift.

It was a different story for the home rink of Ken Varney, Graham Smith, Barney Britton and Tony Wallis. Four shots down after three ends, they then took complete control of the game and ran out comfortable winners 25 - 8, 17 shots to the good.  That gave Maldon an overall score of 30 - 28 to go through to the next round in two weeks time against PML.

Tuesday 24th  Home  v Stock - The C team continued their successful run with a 6 - 2 win over Stock. On the rink of Pete Brazier, Graham Smith, Barney Britton and Colin Wall, were in control after 12 ends leading 16 - 10, but Stock then pulled back getting 11 shots to lead by 4 with two ends to go. Maldon scored 2 on the penultimate end but lost the last end to go down 19 - 22.

The other rink of Dave (Mr Consistent) Torrice, Ron Thackray, Barry McDonagh and Ken Varney, were always in control and led from the very first end. Leading 18 - 6 after thirteen ends, despite a minor comeback by Stock, Maldon ran out winners by 20 shots to 12. An overall win of 39 - 34, and leaves Maldon in third place in the league.

July
Tuesday 1st
Home v Gt. Baddow A  - Another win in the league on Tuesday,  this time against a strong Great Baddow team who beat us in the first game of the season

Kevin’s Cornwell’s rink got off to a poor start, trailing 0 - 9 after 6 ends. But they showed fighting spirt and fought back to 13 - 15 with one end to go. Unfortunately they concede 3 shots on the last end to go down 13 - 18.

But Colin Wall’s rink were always in control, 14 - 7 up after 9 ends, and kept applying the pressure to finish 23 - 12, giving Maldon a 36 - 30 scoreline and a 6 - 2 victory. Now sitting in second place after this sixth league win in a row.

Thursday 3rd KO Shield 1st Round - In action for the second time this week, this time in the KO Shield against PML. An emphatic victory.

The away rink of Dave Torrice, Ron Thackray, Barry McDonagh and Ken Varney won 23 - 6, ahead from the fifth end.

At home, Alan Brand, Carole Ash, Barney Britton and Tony Wallis lead from the first end. 11 - 0 up after 6 ends, they ended up winning 27 - 9, giving an overall result of 50 shots to 15.

Tuesday 8th   Home v Danbury C - What a nail biter this was. Due to a misunderstanding, Maldon played a man short on one rink. More of that later.

The full rink of Graham Smith, Cherry Richardson, Barry Mcdonagh and Colin Wall got off to a slow start and for much of the game it looked as though they would lose. But typically they dug in and finally got ahead on the sixteenth end. They held their nerve and ran out 16 - 13 winners. All the team played their part but skip Colin bowled some brilliant woods to keep us in the game.

The other rink had only three bowlers, Carole Ash, Ken Varney and skip Kevin Cornwell. Knowing they would lose 25% of their shots for playing a player short, all three bowled very well indeed. They battled away to win by 17 shots to 13, which meant a final score of 12.75 to 13. So close. One more shot would have given them the game.

However the final result was a 6 - 2 victory which leaves Maldon in second place, just one point behind the leaders.

Tuesday 15th  Away v Falcon A -

The C team travelled to Stock still in with a chance to win the league, but they had to win. Maldon got off to a very slow start. After 9 ends Tony Wallis’s rink were down 3 shots to 18, whilst Kevin Cornwell’s rink were down 4 shots to 10. Then came the fight back. Tony’s rink fought back to 19 - 25 and Kevin’s rink won 15 - 14. That meant a 2 - 6 defeat. Having won the league last year, it was always going to be difficult to repeat that success. However we did finish third, only two points behind the league winners Falcon.

And the season is still not over. We are in the final of the KO Shield against Silver End on 30th August at Great Baddow.

Finally well done to all the team members who played this season. Thank you.

Tuesday 22nd Home v Billericay A - Back to our winning ways against Billericay A. After last weeks disappointment, both rinks had good wins.

Carole Ash, Graham Smith, Ken Varney and skip Kevin Cornwell took the lead on end 3 and never relinquished it. All four played their part, and they ran out winners by 17 shots to 11.

The other rink of Dave Torrice, Ron Thackray, Barry McDonagh and skip Colin Wall lead all the way from the first end, running out 22 - 11 winners. Again all four played their part in securing a comfortable victory.

This gave Maldon an 8 - 0 win by 39 shots to 22. And this result puts Maldon back at the top of the table.

Tuesday 29th Home v Chelmsford A - A tough game this week against Chelmsford A, who like us are in the running for the league title. Dave Torrice, Graham Smith, Ken Varney and Kevin Cornwell were in the lead for almost the whole match and playing very well against a strong Chelmsford four ran out winners by 24 shots to 20.

Unfortunately the other rink, Colin Wall, William Wallis, Barry McDonagh and Tony Wallis could not match that winning result. All square after 7 ends they conceded 11 shots over the next  4 ends and could not pull it back, eventually losing 12 shots to 27, giving a match result of 2 - 6.

But we are still only 3 points behind leaders Silver End who we play next week. So everything still or play for.

Thursday 31st KO Shield Semi-final - Maldon C v Maldon A - This was always going to be an interesting encounter and so it proved to be.

Peter Brazier, Barry McDonagh, Ken Varney and Tony Wallis, playing against Peter Saunders, Phil Arnold, Maurice Willett and Roger Little, got off to a flying start  and after 7 ends were leading 16 - 0. But then things changed. Maldon A came right back in to the match and won 6 of the next 7 ends to bring the score to 18 - 12. But then Maldon C pulled away to win 26 - 13.

A similar story with Maldon C’s other rink. Dave Torrice, William Wallis, Colin Wall and Kevin Cornwell against Geoff Cox, John Rawlinson , Richard Walker and Sheila Wright, were in control from the first end and after 12 ends had a comfortable lead of 20 shots to 7. Four ends later and the score was 20 - 17, with Maldon A scoring 6 shots on the sixteenth end. Maldon A hung on to win 24 - 18.

So a victory to Maldon C by 50 shots to 31. Commiserations to Maldon A but an excellent game on both rinks with both teams playing very well.

So Maldon C progress to the final against Silver End and Great Baddow on Saturday 30th August.

August

Tuesday 5th  Away v Silver End - Could Maldon keep their league title hopes alive by beating Silver End, who were three points ahead.

On Kevin Cornwell’s there was never more than 3 shots between the sides throughout the match. Both teams won 9 ends each shows just how close it was. But Maldon prevailed and secured victory by 15 to 12. Two points secured.

And now to Tony Wallis’s rink. Another nail biter, again with both sides winning 9 ends each. Down 5 shots after 13 ends, they pulled themselves back to lead 17 - 15 with one end to go. Two shots to Silver End on the final end gave a 17 - 17 draw. But that gave Maldon a 7 - 1 victory and title hopes very much back on with just one match to go. All eight players performed very well, but special mention must be made of Ron Thackray who stepped in as a late replacement and had a superb game. Four sides are still in contention to win the league. A very tense evening next Tuesday beckons.

Tuesday 12th Away v Stock A - The C team travelled to Stock still in with a chance to win the league, but they had to win.

Thank you.
