About Northern Fenix
Our Story
Northern Fenix Parrot Rescue was born from a simple belief: every bird deserves the chance of a brighter future.
The journey that led to Northern Fenix began with a very special Bare-eyed Cockatoo called Maple.
Maple had previously been through another rescue before being purchased by someone who genuinely wanted to give her a good home. When her new owner realised that Maple needed more help than expected, they tried everything they could and eventually reached out to us for support.
When Maple came into our care, she was underweight, had fleas and her nails badly needed attention. Seeing the condition she was in had a lasting impact on us.
It made us ask an important question: could we do more?
After a great deal of research, learning and encouragement, that question eventually became Northern Fenix Parrot Rescue.
Where old life ends and new life begins
Our name represents exactly what we want for the birds who come through our doors. Like the phoenix rising again, surrender or rescue should not be the end of a bird's story. It should be the beginning of a new chapter.
Today, Northern Fenix provides a safe place for parrots and other companion birds whose circumstances have changed.
Birds entering our care undergo a period of rehabilitation and assessment. Where appropriate, this also includes veterinary care and DNA sexing. We take the time to learn about each bird's personality, behaviour, needs and history before deciding what future is right for them.
For some birds, that future will be a carefully matched adoptive home. Others may require longer-term care.
Putting the birds first
Northern Fenix is built around the welfare of the birds in our care.
We believe in responsible ownership, appropriate housing, enrichment, companionship and allowing birds to express their natural behaviours. We do not support breeding rescue birds, and we do not agree with routine wing clipping.
Our adoption process is designed to find suitable, committed homes rather than simply rehome birds as quickly as possible. Birds adopted through Northern Fenix remain protected by our adoption agreement and mandatory return clause. If an adopter's circumstances change, the bird must return to Northern Fenix rather than being sold or passed on.
