Surrender a Bird
Need to Surrender Your Bird?
We understand that circumstances can change. Illness, bereavement, housing changes, financial difficulties, changes within the family or simply recognising that you can no longer meet your bird's needs can all lead someone to consider surrender.
Asking for help is better than allowing a bird's welfare to suffer.
Northern Fenix Parrot Rescue handles surrender enquiries with compassion and without judgement. Our priority is the welfare of the bird and helping to determine the safest way forward.
What We Need to Know
When contacting us about surrendering a bird, please provide as much honest information as you can.
This may include the bird's name, species, approximate age, sex if known, how long you have had them, diet, behaviour, handling, living arrangements, medical or veterinary history, previous homes and any known behavioural or health concerns.
Please also tell us about any identification such as a leg ring or microchip and provide any paperwork you have, including DNA certificates, veterinary records or CITES documentation where applicable.
Please don't worry if you don't know everything. We understand that sometimes very little history is available.
What Happens When a Bird Comes Into Our Care?
A surrender form will be completed to record the information available about the bird and formally document the surrender.
Once accepted into Northern Fenix, the bird will be given time to settle and will undergo an appropriate period of quarantine, rehabilitation and assessment.
Where appropriate, veterinary care and DNA sexing may also be arranged.
Every bird is different, and we do not place a fixed timescale on rehabilitation. The bird will only be considered for adoption when Northern Fenix believes they are ready.
Please Bring Their Belongings Where Possible
If possible, we encourage owners to bring the bird's familiar cage, food, toys, perches and other belongings when surrendering.
Familiar items can help reduce stress during what can be a significant change for a bird.
Please Contact Us Before Bringing a Bird
Northern Fenix is a home-based rescue and visits are strictly by prior arrangement.
Please do not arrive with a bird without contacting us first. We need to consider available space, quarantine arrangements and the individual needs of birds already in our care.
Our full address is not publicly displayed for the privacy and security of the rescue and the welfare of the birds.
