Adopting from Northern Fenix
Adopting a rescue bird is a big commitment. Parrots are intelligent, complex animals and, depending on the species, can remain part of a family for many years.
Our adoption process is designed to put the welfare of the bird first and help us find a home that suits each bird's individual needs.
Before a Bird Is Available
Birds entering Northern Fenix undergo a period of rehabilitation and assessment before being considered for adoption.
During this time we get to know their personality, behaviour, preferences and individual needs. Where appropriate, birds also receive a veterinary check and DNA sexing.
We do not rush this process. Some birds may need considerably more time than others before they are ready.
Applying to Adopt
Anyone interested in one of our available birds will be asked to complete a Northern Fenix Parrot Adoption Form.
We will consider the individual bird's needs alongside the potential home, including existing birds or other pets, accommodation, experience and the amount of appropriate interaction and enrichment that can be provided.
Submitting an application does not automatically guarantee an adoption. Our responsibility is to choose the home we believe is suitable for that individual bird.
Required Adoption Contribution.
When a bird is successfully matched with an approved home, a required adoption contribution applies. The amount will be discussed and confirmed before adoption.
Northern Fenix adoption contributions are non-refundable.
Adoption Contributions go back into supporting the work of the rescue and helping us care for birds in need.
Our Adoption Safeguarding & Mandatory Return Policy
This is one of the most important conditions of adopting a bird from Northern Fenix Parrot Rescue.
Adoption does not automatically transfer ownership of the bird. Unless Northern Fenix subsequently confirms a Transfer of Ownership in writing, the bird remains the property of Northern Fenix Parrot Rescue.
We retain ownership as a safeguarding measure. It is not intended to interfere with an adopter providing a safe and loving home. It exists to help protect our birds from being sold, advertised for sale, passed from home to home, gifted, exchanged or independently rehomed.
There is no automatic time period after which ownership transfers. Where a bird is settled in a safe, suitable and permanent home, Northern Fenix may choose at a later stage to transfer ownership to the adopter. Any such transfer must be confirmed separately in writing.
Responsibility While the Bird Is in Your Care
While Northern Fenix may retain ownership, the adopter is responsible for the bird's day-to-day care and welfare, including appropriate accommodation, diet, enrichment and veterinary treatment when required.
The adopter is also responsible for the normal costs of keeping the bird, including food, veterinary treatment, medication, accommodation and other necessary care.
Northern Fenix retaining ownership for safeguarding purposes does not mean that the rescue is responsible for these ongoing costs, unless we have specifically agreed otherwise in writing.
If You Can No Longer Keep Your Bird
If your circumstances change at any point and you can no longer care for or keep your adopted bird, the bird must be returned to Northern Fenix Parrot Rescue.
A Northern Fenix bird must not be sold, advertised for sale, given away, exchanged, passed to another person or organisation, or independently rehomed without our prior written permission.
Please contact us. We would always rather welcome one of our birds safely back into our care than see that bird passed from home to home.
These conditions exist for one reason: to protect the long-term welfare and security of every bird entrusted to Northern Fenix.
Our Commitment Doesn't End at Adoption
Every bird that comes through Northern Fenix's doors remains part of the Northern Fenix family.
Adoption gives that bird the opportunity for a new beginning in a loving home, but our commitment to their welfare does not simply disappear when they leave the rescue.
