GENERAL SHORT MAT BOWLS RULES
Short mat bowls is based on the outdoor version of the game, so most of the rules are the same or adaptations of the rules of the outdoor game. The following describes the major differences and should be helpful to new (and old!) players of the game.
- The pre-marked mat is 6 feet wide and between 40 and 45 feet long. A white wooden block is placed on the line across the centre of the mat. At each end of the mat is a wooden fender which defines the limits of the ditch area and provides some protection to the players (and the hall!) from heavily bowled woods. At the beginning of each end a rubber delivery foot mat is placed in the pre-marked central position at the end of the mat that an end is to be played from and the jack is placed on the centre jack line at the opposite end of the mat.
- The team who bowls first in an end decides where on the centre jack line at the head end the jack is placed (from a ‘short’ jack at the front of the line to a ‘long’ jack furthest from the bowlers).
- When delivering a bowl, a player must have one foot entirely within, or above, the bounds of the delivery foot mat. The other foot must be within and not touching the side delivery lines. If either condition is not met, then a foot fault occurs and the bowl is removed from the playing area.
- Any bowl which touches the centre block is considered dead. The bowl should be stopped before it enters the head and the block must be replaced. If the dead bowl is not stopped and then displaces any bowl or the jack in the head, the team or player which did not deliver the dead bowl should replace the displaced bowl(s) and/or jack in their former position.
- Any bowl which fails to cross the far dead line is considered dead and must be removed from the playing area. To cross the line, the bowl must be wholly past the back edge of the line and not touching or overhanging it.
- Any bowl which crosses the ditch line without first touching the jack is considered dead and is immediately removed. In this case the bowl will have crossed the line, if any part of the bowl is touching or overhanging the front edge of the ditch line.
- Any bowl leaving the side of the mat is dead.
- If the jack is driven off the mat the end is declared dead. In the CWBC leagues the team causing the dead end automatically lose the end, conceding 2 shots.
- If a wood is played which touches the jack before coming to rest it is declared a ‘toucher’ and is marked with spray chalk.
- A toucher or the jack remains in play when it crosses the ditch line. If a toucher or the jack is completely over the ditch line, then it can only be moved by another toucher or the jack. A toucher or the jack lying across the ditch line is still ‘live’ and can be moved by any wood. A toucher or jack, which has completely crossed the ditch line, has its position marked by chalk marks on the mat, so that it can be returned to its position, if it is illegally moved by a non-toucher wood.
CWBC SHORT MAT COMPETITIONS
General Rules
1. The rules for Short Mat Bowls as laid down by ESMBA apply to all club competitions.
2. All full and social members of the club are eligible to play in Short Mat competitions.
3. Fixtures should be played on the scheduled date as published on the Club’s web site and on fixture cards. If a team is unable to play on that date, you must inform the organiser(s) and the opposing team in advance. You are responsible for finding an alternative date in consultation with the organiser(s), which is acceptable to both teams.
4. Any team causing a dead end (jack off the mat) in Pairs or Triples Leagues will automatically lose the end, conceding 2 shots. Skips and second players in triples may not visit the head.
5. Team positions in all league competitions will be decided by:
- Total of points
- If tied on points, better shot difference
- If still tied, result of game between tied teams
- If still tied, highest number of shots scored
6. In the event of any dispute about these rules or any other matter the organiser(s) decision will be final.
PAIRS LEAGUE
7. This will be a drawn pairs competition. All entered players will be split into 2 equal groups (leads and skips, based on playing ability) and pairs will be formed by drawing one player from each group, with the aim of producing balanced teams. Teams will them be allocated to 2 Pools, playing on alternate Fridays through the season. Each team will play all others in their pool once.
8. At the end of the season the top 3 teams in each pool will play off for the overall Pairs championship. On the finals night the order of play will be:
· Game 1: 2nd team Pool A v. 3rd team Pool B
· Game 2: 2nd team Pool B v. 3rd team Pool A
· Game 3: Winners Pool A v. Winner Game 2
· Game 4: Winners Pool B v. Winner Game 1
· Final will then be Winner Game 3 v. Winner Game 4
9. Pairs matches (three bowls per player) will normally be played over 10 ends. Teams may play in any order they wish and may change their order during a match, but only at the completion of an end.
10. The number of ends may be reduced by the competition organiser, if one or both members of a pair are late. The reduction will be one end for every full 4 minutes, down to a minimum of 7 ends.
11. If one member of a pairs team is unable to play in a scheduled fixture, a substitute may be allowed to play in their place. The substitute must be a member of the club qualified to play in the Short Mat competitions and must not be a member of a team in the same Pool.
12. If a team fails to turn up for a match without prior notice, then they will forfeit the match. The non-defaulting pair will be awarded a win by 10 – 0.
TRIPLES LEAGUE
13. Players entering for the triples league will be allocated to one of 3 groups called lead, two, skip, based on playing ability. Teams of 4 players will be formed by drawing 2 from the lead group and one each from the two and skip groups with the aim of producing equally matched teams. To ensure that all players have a fair share of games, there will be a maximum number of games for any player, depending on the number of matches to be played (number of matches x 3, then divided by 4).
14. Triples matches (two bowls per player) will normally be played over 12 ends. Teams may play in any order they wish and may change their order during a match, but only at the completion of an end.
15. The number of ends may be reduced by the competition organiser, if a team or team member is late. The reduction will be one end for every full 4 minutes, down to a minimum of 8 ends.
16. If a team fails to turn up for a match without prior notice, then they will forfeit the match. The non-defaulting triple will be awarded a win by 12 – 0.
KNOCKOUT COMPETITIONS
17. Matches in both Pairs (two woods per player) and Singles (four woods) competitions will be played over 2 sets of 7 ends. The winner of a set is the player/team with the higher total shots and scores 2 points. Sets may be tied, in which case both players/teams gain 1 point each. The player/team with the higher number of points will win the match. If there is a tie on points, the players/teams will play an additional tie break end to decide the match.
18. Players may form teams as they wish – the organiser will try to match any players without a chosen partner. Pairs are expected to play as entered. Provided your opponents agree, you may rearrange a match to an alternative date, either before or after the match scheduled, as long as the match is completed before the next round is due. If that is not possible, a substitute may be allowed as in Rule 4 above for one match only in early rounds but cannot be a player entered in the same competition, even if already eliminated. Substitutes may not compete in semi-final or final matches.
