Architectural Features

The Strawberry Arch:

This originally formed the entrance to the Strawberry Tea Gardens on Cambridge Place in the village of Falsgrave. They were re-erected in the gardens of Crescent House sometime in the 1920's.

The Duckhouse:

In a photograph of the millpond in the north Yorkshire Archives dating from the 1850's there is no sign of the duckhouse, but it is present in the photographs I own of the same pond dating from the 1860's. It was presumably added by the council for the opening of the park in 1862. In recent years it had become very dilapidated and the Civic Society raised funds to replace it in 2017.

The Grotto:

Little is known about this structure which would have been originally in the grounds of Londesborough Lodge. In various articles it has been described as an ice house and a hermitage but it is much more likely to have been a grotto, an ornamental garden feature common in Victorian Gardens.

The Fountain

Even less is known about the fountain which is also in the grounds of Londesborough Lodge. We can find no early photographs of this but it first appears on the 1929 map of the park. On the 1912 map a sundial is in the position now occupied by the fountain.

Vernon Road Footbridge

This cast iron bridge was built by Lord Londesborough in the 1860's to give easier access to the Spa Bridge.
