April 16th
14 members (an excellent turn out), tidied up the rockery by the urn bed, planted foxgloves and cowslips, cleared wild garlic from the shade border and planted geraniums, pulmonaria, hosta and astilbe, collected litter.
May 8th
Coronation Weekend - we tidied up the rockery, added more plants to the borders and planted a Coronation tree, Sorbus Aucuparia, Sunshine, a Rowan with white flowers in the spring and yellow berries in the autumn. We then had an indoor picnic as the rain started to lash down at this point.
June 24th
An extremely hot day which necessitated a shorter then usual work party. Given that it was the day after Armed Forces Day most of the 9 volunteers concentrated on litter picking.
5th July
The first evening session of the summer was attended by 7 volunteers who tidied the border above the pond and did some planting. We welcomed two new volunteers to the group.

Cancelled due to bad weather

12 volunteers focused on working in the ‘Peace Garden’ and, of course, the litter pickers cleared a lot of rubbish.

An evening session where 10 volunteers weeded, tidied and litter picked focusing particularly on the area at the back of Woodend where the performances of Pinocchio by the Scarborough Theatre Company were taking place over the Bank Holiday weekend.
29th August
In the last evening session of the year, as well as the usual weeding and litter picking, two of our volunteers made a start on preparing the Victorian Bench for painting.
10th September
We were hit by a late heatwave so the ground was too hard to plant anything, and it was also too hot for the bench to be painted. Instead the 7 volunteers prioritised pruning in the Peace Garden as well as litter picking.
24th September
7 volunteers concentrated on clearing the area around the mill pond. With thanks to the North Yorkshire Council Parks Team we also have the use of an extra long grabber to allow us to get to some of the litter we cant normally reach!
8 October
7 volunteers cleared the area around the Mill Pond and cleared a good amount of litter.
19 October
Volunteers from the Environment Agency cleared pond weed from the Mill Pond as well as pruning back some of the small islands within the pond area as part of their Away Day activities.
29 October
Unfortunately this work party was cancelled due to bad weather.

Litter picking and some tidying were the order of the day for the 9 volunteers today.
10 December
At the last work party of 2023, 8 of us spent an hour litter picking before the heavens opened.
