Wallop Primary School is looking for New Governors from across our community.

What do Governors do?

A school’s governing body has three main functions:

· To ensure that the school has a clear vision and direction.

· To hold the headteacher to account for the school’s performance.

· To make sure that the school’s money is well spent.

Being a school governor means being interested in getting the best education for the pupils at the school. Governors can become involved in a range of school matters, which can include recruitment, finance and curriculum. The role is strategic, not operational (i.e. the school manages and we hold them to account) and we act as a critical friend to the Head to support her in her role of managing the school.

Governors also provide a strong link between the school and the local community, and an independent view to support the school on long-term development and improvement.

Wallop is on an exciting journey. After a fantastic Ofsted visit in December 2025, under the new headteacher Katie Simons, the school really is driving forward. This is an exciting time to join the team!

Why Volunteer to be a Governor?

· Help school ensure children fulfil their aspirations.

· Model the values of your community and make a difference to the lives of young people.

· Meet great new people and bring a fresh perspective to the work of the board.

· Develop new skills and knowledge with governor training.

What is the Commitment?

Governors meet once every half term (6 times a year) for a full governing body meeting (FGB). In addition, there are various roles which governors can be involved in which involve visits into the school, monitoring progress and the like against a set of expectations

What Skills Are We Looking For?

You don’t need any previous experience of being a school governor, Hampshire County Council provides all the training needed when you join and offer a range of training for free throughout your time as a governor.

We are however looking for people from across the community with a range of knowledge and experience. From health and safety, facilities management, marketing, finance & accounting through to those who may have experience of training and curriculums in education and learning establishments. Across our governing body we have governors who have worked, or still work, in a diverse range of jobs from the military through to journalism, construction, accounting and project management.

The main skill you need is an interest in making a difference!

If you would like to join the team and be a part of making a difference in primary education, or you would just like to find out some more, please contact Jon Hannan (Chair of Governors) on j.hannan@wallop.hants.sch.uk .
