Competition Rules 2026

ALL COMPETITIONS NON-APPEARANCE

In all competitions, where a competitor is not present within 30 minutes of the start time they will forfeit the game.

 

LADIES & MEN’S CHAMPIONSHIP SINGLES

Winner will be the first player to reach 21 shots, using 4 woods each end. Marker Required.

 

MEN’S VETERAN SINGLES & LADIES SENIOR SINGLES COMPETITION

Entry is open to members over the age of 70 on 1st May each competition year. Winner will be the first player to reach 21 shots using 4 woods each end. Marker Required.

 

MIXED JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIP  SINGLES

Entry is confined to those members who have NOT won any 4 wood singles Competition at the Club or any other club affiliated to Bowls England or any equivalent overseas body. Winner is the first player to reach 21 shots using 4 woods each end. Marker Required.

 

CLUB HANDICAP COMPETITIONS

Each player will be allocated a handicap by the Working Party Committee (WPC). The object of the handicap is to give each player an equal chance of winning the competition. Handicapping will range from 0 – 10 for men and ladies. In order to enter this competition players must have been a playing member the preceding year so a handicap can be awarded. The winner of a handicap match will be the lower handicapped player when he/she reaches 21 shots or the higher handicapped player when he/she reaches 21 shots plus the difference in the 2 handicaps. Four woods. Marker Required.

 

DRAWN 3 WOOD MIXED PAIRS COMPETITION and NOMINATED 3 WOOD MIXED PAIRS

One substitute/replacement only, approved by the WPC, is permitted during the competition, and the same substitute/replacement may play at any stage of the competition. The substitute/replacement will not be permitted to play in the final of the competition if he/she has not played in any earlier round. The pairs are free to arrange their own order of play at the start of each game. Winners will be the pair with the highest score after 18 ends. In the event the scores are level after 18 ends then a further end will be played to decide the winners.

 

In the Drawn Mixed Pairs the pairing will be done by the WPC in a manner which is aimed at producing an equitable competition.

 

LADIES 2 WOOD SINGLES COMPETITION

The Winner will be the player with the highest score after 21 ends.

Marker Required.

 

MEN’S 2 WOOD SINGLES COMPETITION

The Winner will be the player with the highest score after 21 ends.

Marker Required.

 

TWO WOOD YARDSTICK SINGLES COMPETITION (LADIES)

Only winning woods, held by one player. Within one yard of the jack will count. For example – If Player A has shot wood, B has second and A has the third, all within one yard of the jack, then Player A scores 1 shot and B none. A maximum of 2 shots is available in each end. The winner will be the player with the highest score after 21 ends. If the game has reached a point where it is not possible for one of the players to win within the 21 ends then the game can end.

100- UP MIXED SINGLES COMPETITION

Each individual match will be a game of singles with four woods each. The Winner will be the first player to reach 100 points, using the scoring of 4 points for shot wood, 3 for second, 2 for third and 1 for fourth. The Player holding the shot wood will take the mat on the next end  irrespective of the total number of points scored by either player. In the event of the scores being close and each player reaching 100 points in the final end, the Player reaching 100 first will be the winner. For Example – If both players have reached 95 with Player A scoring 3 and 2, Player B scoring 4 & 1, then the winner will be Player A because he/she will have reached 100 first. Should two bowls be tied with the scoring they will share the points due ie If Player A has the shot bowl then he/she will receive 4 points. If Players A and B have the next 2 bowls tied each player will be awarded 2.5 points each and the next bowl receives 1 point.

MIXED 3-2-1 SINGLES  COMPETITION

Each Player has 3 woods and the match is played over 15 ends. The closest winning wood scores 3 points, the second 2 points and the third 1 point – a total of 6 points each end. In the event of level scores after 15 ends an extra end, with 3 woods  each, shall be played with only the wood nearest to the jack being the winning shot.
